Staff Sgt. Junior J. Shelton, who bravely served his country until his untimely death on October 4, 1944, in the vicinity of Hatterath, Germany. Known to family and friends as “Junior,” he was born J.Z. Shelton, Jr. on August 10, 1920, and his journey through life was marked by a spirit of determination and an unwavering commitment to duty.
Junior entered military service on April 7, 1939, serving with valor at multiple posts across the United States, including Fort Benjamin Harrison and Fort Custer, before ultimately joining the 115th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Division. From the inception of World War II, Junior’s dedication was palpable; he attained the rank of Sergeant and earned numerous honors, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart with oak leaf clusters for his bravery.
Despite being declared Missing in Action until 1950, Junior’s legacy remained etched in the hearts of his family and fellow servicemen. It wasn’t until 1950 that the Army confirmed his status as Killed in Action, a solemn conclusion that underscored the profound sacrifices made by those who wear the uniform. He fought alongside his comrades during a fierce battle that marked a critical moment in history, a testament to his courage and commitment.
