ABOUT THE MISSION:

We have been invited to attend the Stars and Stripes Honor Flights again this year. Our next flight is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, 2018. I don’t have the numbers on the heroes going on this trip but the schedule is the same as most flights in the past.

Remember, this is our opportunity to say thank you to these men and women while they are still with us. So far 3329 of our WW II veterans have made the trip as well as 1937 of our heroes from the Korean Conflict and 256 Vietnam Veterans. As usual, World War II and Korea veterans and their guardians and medical staff will start arriving at Mitchell Airport at 5:00 a.m. on April 14 and return home at 8:30 p.m.

The public is not invited to attend the departure but the PGR are invited to stand a flag line to welcome the veterans and their escorts and assist with getting them and their personal effects from curb to check-in and assisting when they return.

Special Instructions:

The D concourse is right across from the Harley shop. We will stage at the top of the escalators, there are some tables and chairs.

Veterans’ check-in begins at 5:15 am

Those standing the flag line should assemble by 4:30 a.m.

We are limited to 24 flag bearers, the first 24 PGR members to arrive will receive flags. The rest are welcome to join the crowd. Should we not have 24 members when we are ready to form our line, the flags will be offered to members in similar groups.

The evening mission staging is now in the southern walkway between the parking structure and the main terminal area.

We are limited to 24 flag bearers, the first 24 PGR members to arrive will receive flags. The rest are welcome to join the crowd. Should we not have 24 members when we are ready to form our line, the flags will be offered to members in similar groups.

We had 14 people stand the flag line to welcome our veterans back from D.C.. We had 7 PGR members and 7 other individuals, mostly from the American Legion and the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association. Also standing at the end of our flag line (but without flags) were 6 members of the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department Honor Guard. They had associates of theirs on the Honor Flight. One big change is that we only line up on one side of the aisle now. Family members now sit on the other side of the aisle and we don't want to block their view. We are standing much closer together now but it still works. Since we had a total of 20 people standing in line on Saturday, we should be able to fit 4 more in to accommodate our 24 maximum limit. We were extremely well received by the crowd when we walked in and again when we followed the procession out. Our contact Laura from the S&S Board of Directors commented to me how glad they were to have us there. All went well and it is a real privilege to be able to honor our veterans on their return and shake their hand and say "Welcome Home"!
