Thomas A. Spierto, Veteran
USA - WWII
Valatie, New York - 17 Jul 2017
ABOUT THE MISSION:
I am sad to report that we have lost yet another member of the "Greatest Generation". Mr. Thomas A. Spierto, age 94 and three quarters, left this Earth on July 13, 2017.
Born in New York City, he grew up in Little Italy, proud of his heritage and neighborhood. In January of 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, 258 Armored Division, starting in Fort Drum, NY. During WWII, he served in Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and England. He was honorably discharged in October of 1945 at the rank of Private and was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the American Service Medal and the WWII Army of Occupation Lapel Pin.
He returned from the War and worked for the U.S. Post Office for over 30 years as a carrier in Manhattan, enjoying every minute of his interactions with people. When he retired from the Post Office, Tom and his family moved to the Albany area where he was an Ichabod Crane bus driver for a short time, then ran a parking lot in downtown Albany.
The Patriot Guard Riders are proud to have the opportunity to stand and render dignity, honor and respect for the life and service of Mr. Thomas A. Spierto, proud US Army veteran and Greatest Generation hero.
