SUMMARY:WWII Veteran Appreciation Event
DESCRIPTION:***Mission Cancelled (Weather)***\nHOTH Mission\nWWII Veteran Appreciation Event\nUSMC – WWII\nMacon\, Georgia – 08-25-19\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE MISSION: \nThe Patriot Guard Riders have been invited by the family of a local WWII USMC Purple Heart Veteran to attend a surprise event in his honor.\n\n\nOur WWII veteran is 98 years old and was scheduled to participate on the September 7 Middle Georgia Honor Flight to Washington DC to tour the war memorials there but was forced to surrender his seat due to declining health condition and doctor recommendation against flying. He served in the Untied States Marine Corps when WWII began he chose to enter the service as a Marine 10 May 1942. After completing Boot Camp at the Parris Island Military Base\, South Carolina\, he was shipped to the Pacific Theater and served\, including\, but not limited to\, the Islands of New Caledonia\, Guadalcanal\, Bougainville and New Hebrides. Whilst there\, he was one of the mechanics that serviced Black Sheep Squadron F4U Corsairs (Marine Fighter Squadron 214 (VMF-214) under Major Greg “Pappy” Boyington in the Solomon Islands Campaign. One of his major accomplishments whilst there was taking two damaged F4U Corsairs\, one damaged front and the other damaged rear and making one aircraft from the two\, flight tested there and returned to Combat. As a part of the Marine contingent\, He then embarked with General Douglas MacArthur in his return to the Philippine Islands. He was injured in the Battle of Luzon and received the Purple Heart 2 March 1945. He left service on 5 October 1945 at the rank of Master Technical Sergeant.\n\n\nFriends and family along with some special organizations have made it possible to surprise this deserving veteran (please help us keep it a surprise) with a special event at the Middle Georgia Regional Airport at the Lowe Aviation Hanger (next to the Airport terminal). The Commemorative Air Force\, Dixie Wing in Peachtree City will be flying a vintage F4U Corsair onto the airfield with a low flyover before landing and will taxi into the Lowe Aviation Hanger where he and friends through this special invitation can share this up-close and personal experience. We will line our motorcycles in front of the hanger on the tarmac (some inside) and stand a flag line for reception.\n\n\nThe Patriot Guard Riders will be present along with representatives from a few media sources\, the Museum of Aviation\, local officials and some local uniformed AFJROTC cadets and invited WWII and Korean war vets. The aircraft will depart after 1 hour at which time the event will conclude. This will be a social event where veterans can interact with each other as well as admirers.\n\n\nPRIMARY STAGING DETAILS: 08-25-19 \nStaging Time: 10:30 \nLowe Aviation\n(Middle Georgia Regional Airport)\n2178 Flightline Ave\nMacon\, Georgia 31216\n\n\nRide Captain: \nDon “Big Don” Wilson\n478-951-1740\nbigdonwilson@patriotguard.org\n\n\nSpecial Instructions: \nWe will have a short briefing in the parking lot before moving the bikes out on the tarmac and to the WWII Hanger\n\n\nFlags & Water:\nFlags will be provided\nIf you have large bike flags\, please bring them.\nWater will be provided.\n\n\n\nSubmitted By: Don Wilson \nPosition: Georgia State Captain \n\nNote: You do not have to own/ride a motorcycle or be a veteran to join\, and membership is Free.
