Smith was a member of Company E\, 2nd Battalion\, 9th Infantry Regiment\, 2nd Infantry Division. He was reported missing on Sept. 1\, 1950 after an assault along the Naktong River\, Yongsan\, South Korea.He was declared deceased as of Dec. 31\, 1953. On June 4\, 2019 the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced that Cpl. Smith was officially accounted for through dental and anthropological analysis and circumstantial and material evidence and he would be returning home to Georgia on August 15th. The remaining family of Cpl. Pete proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve (1969 – 1975). Pete achieved the rank of Sergeant (E-5) and earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. As an active PGR member\, Ride Captain Pete (also known as Eye-Candy) was in charge of PGR participation at Honor Flights and active in Snowball Express and Wreaths Across America. He is survived by his wife of 49 years\, daughter and son\, granddaughters\, and a great-granddaughter. He was recently interviewed for Patriot of the Month. His family and the Patriot Guard meant everything to Pete. He is well loved and revered and is greatly missed by all who knew him. James was a native Idahoan\, born and raised in the Blue Creek and Wolf Lodge areas of Coeur d Alene and often shared stories of life in this area during the depression. He served in the United States Army during World War II\, landing on Omaha Beach four days after D Day. He was a driver in the medical motor pool\, moving hospitals within the European theater. His unit was captured by the German occupation and while fervently praying for Patton to break through enemy lines he made the promise to himself that if he survived he would come home and enroll in college. When he returned home after the war he kept his promise and enrolled in the University of Idaho\, and later the Eastern Montana University\, attaining his degree in education. He was honorably discharged from active duty on 21 Feburary 1950. Following his military service he continued in the radio & television field for 40 years.
