DESCRIPTION:Honor Mission\nWilliam Lester Nevill\nUSN – WWII\nSan Antonio\, Texas – 07-18-19\n\n\n \n\nABOUT THE MISSION: \nThe family of Mr. William Lester Nevill\, a US Navy Veteran\, requests the presence and participation of the Patriot Guard Riders at the graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. William Lester Nevill\, known to family and friends as “Bill” or “Bud” (October 3\, 1926 – June 22\, 2019) of Austin\, Texas passed away on June 22\, 2019 at St. David’s Hospital in Round Rock\, TX with his wife and family at his side.Mr. Nevill was born in Warren\, TX on October 3\, 1926. After graduating from high school in Warren\, he enlisted at age 17 in the U S Navy where he proudly served aboard the USS San Diego attaining the rank of Fireman First Class. The San Diego\, an anti-aircraft cruiser was one of the most decorated US ships of World War II and was active throughout the Pacific theater. The San Diego was the first major Allied warship to enter Tokyo Bay after the surrender of Japan. Bill was awarded the World War II Victory Medal\, the Philippine Liberation Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal with three stars. Bliss National Cemetery has requested the Far West Texas Patriot Guard Riders to stand a flag line during their quarterly service honoring the internment of our Unaccompanied Veterans and Last Roll Call Ceremony of Remembrance. This ceremony is to recognize those Veterans who were previously laid to rest April through June 2019 without honors or with no family in attendance. These Veterans\, referred to as Unaccompanied Veterans\, are former service members who’s next of kin is unknown or loved ones could not attend their service. Many times\, burial arrangements have been made by a public administrator\, a VA medical center\, or some other authorized entity. A substitute family member will be in attendance to accept the honorary draped flag. He was also assigned to Anderson Air Force Base\, Guam from August 2014 to September 2017 and he was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base\, Louisiana\, from September 2017 to the present. As an active PGR member\, “El-Rod” was a fixture at Honor Flights and the Snowball Express and could always be seen handing out flag pins to the kids. Bill enlisted in the US Air Force where he served honorably before being discharged in 1968\, upon which time he enlisted in the US Army. He began a long and highly decorated career in the the Army\, where he served as an attack helicopter pilot and pilot instructor\, known by his call sign and later nickname “Mad Dog.” Bill served in Vietnam where he received the Bronze Star\, Distinguished Flying Cross\, as well as numerous other awards and commendations. Upon his retirement from the Army\, he became a full time officer in Harker Heights\, first as a patrolman\, Corporal\, Detective\, and finally a Patrol Sergeant. Bill was an original Patriot Guard Rider who served as a Ride Captain\, and later as a Regional Ride Captain for the organization and participated in many missions for several years.
