He was a Counter Signal Intelligence Specialist and later served as a Signal Security Specialist Instructor. He served a total of 25 years before he was honorably discharged. SFC Ostman received the Army Commendation Medal\, Army Achievement Medal\, Army Good Conduct Medal\, National Defense Service Medal\, NCO Professional Development Ribbon\, the Army Service Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon. After his distinguished career\, he then became a helicopter pilot and worked in the federal police and correctional/detention arenas. Survivors include his two step-sons and a step-daughter. Brunner in honor his service to our nation at his funeral\, Friday July 12th at Bergstrasse Lutheran Church Cemetery.  Earl served in the South Pacific and New Guinea during WWII.  After his discharge from the Army he went on to finish college earning a degree in chemistry and graduate studies in engineering.  Earl supported many Veterans Organizations and groups knowing full well the struggles our Veterans faced both in service and returning to civilian life.\nWO Earl W. DESCRIPTION:HOTH Mission\nPaul Kerchum\, POW/MIA\, Retired\nUSA – WWII\nVail\, Arizona – 07-12-19\n\n\n\nABOUT THE MISSION: \nPaul Kerchum joined the United States Army at sixteen years of age and served in the 31st Infantry Regiment in the Phillipines. CMSGT was captured by the Japanese\, was a prisoner of war for thirty four months and survived the Bataan Death March. In 1944\, CMSGT Kerchum was brought aboard the Japanese prison ship\, Shin ‘yo Maru\, also known as a “hell ship”. It was attacked by an American submarine\, who did not know that it had American prisoners aboard. CMSGT Kerchum was one of eighty two survivors who was rescued by Filipino guerillas. Today CMSGT Kerchum is often asked to be a keynote speaker at many events to speak of his military career and his experience as a POW.
