DESCRIPTION:Honor Mission\nCharles ‘Chuck’ Tabor\, Retired\nUSN \, USAR – Korea\nMacon\, Missouri – 07-11-19\n\n\n\nABOUT THE MISSION: \nThe Family of Charles ‘Chuck’ Tabor\, 87\, of Callao\, MO.\, has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to stand in honor and to escort their loved one to his final resting place.  Charles ‘Chuck’ Tabor and his brother spent 16 months in the Army Reserve Unit\, located in Macon\, the 5th Army Reserve\, Company D\, 409th Infantry Regiment prior to their stint in the U S Navy.  Charles ‘Chuck’ Tabor trained in San Diego\, CA\, enlisting on June 12\, 1952. He served on USS-LSMR-409 in the Far East (Landing Ship Medium Rocket).  Although this ship was hit several times in two separate battles from off shore fire\, she suffered no casualties\, but several shipmates were wounded.  Coming under fire they still managed to silence three enemy guns\, while supporting troops that were storming the beaches.  After Peace Treaty in July 1953\, he was deployed on the USS Leroy Wilson-DE 414 to Japan\, then to the Tachen Island off the coast of China to evacuate and destroy equipment before communists took control.  He achieved the rank of Gunners Mate 3rd Class and awarded the Good Conduct Medal\, National Defense Ribbon\, United Nations Campaign Ribbon and the Korea Campaign Ribbon with two battle stars.\n\n\nPRIMARY STAGING DETAILS: 07-11-19 \nStaging: 9:00 AM\n \nHutton & McElwain Funeral Home\n301 N. Curtis Benson requested the Patriot Guard Riders presence to stand a flag line for his service and internment at Hardage-Giddnes Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery as the family shows their final respects to their hero. CAPT Benson had a lifelong interest in aviation and medicine. He earned his wings as an aviator while still in high school. His interest in aviation continued throughout his whole life during which time he accumulated thousands of hours as an aviator and a flight instructor and had an Airline Transport Pilot rating and a DC-9 type rating. He also aided in aircraft accident investigation for the FAA. CAPT Benson served his country for 20 years. After enlisting in the US Navy in 1951 he served four years on active duty as an Aviation Electronics Technician and was honorably discharged as a Second-Class Petty Officer. In 1955 Dr. Benson entered the University of Iowa as a pre-med student. During this two-year period\, he also worked as a technician and pilot on the “Operation Skyhook” project\, studying cosmic radiation and what was to become the Van Allen Radiation Belt. In 1985 he entered the United States Naval Reserve with the rank of Captain where he became a Flight Surgeon and because of his experience as an aviator he was granted a waiver to fly as a naval aviator. As a Captain in the Naval Reserve he was called to active duty stationed in New Orleans as a Flight Surgeon and Director of Operational Medicine and the Director of the Naval Fleet Hospital program. His next and final active duty tour was to Naval Hospital Jacksonville\, Florida. Following his retirement from active duty in 2001 Captain Benson remained on the Naval Hospital staff until 2008.
