We have been honored with an invitation to stand a flag line at RDU as his remains arrive and to escort him\, his family and Dignitaries from Craven County back to New Bern NC. We will also stand a flag line at the funeral home when CPL. Nemec arrives home. This will be a 2 part mission. In late 1950\, Cpl Nemec was a Light Weapons Infantryman assigned to Company A\, 1st Battalion 5th Cavalry Regiment\, 1st Cavalry Division\, engaged in heavy fighting against the Chinese People’s Volunteer Forces (CPVF) at Turtle Head’s Bend\, near the village of Unsan\, North Korea. According to historical reports\, Cpl Nemec was Killed in Action on Nov. 2\, 1950\, CPL Nemec was awarded the Purple Heart\, Combat Infantryman’s Badge\, Korean Service Medal\, United Nation Service Medal\, National Defense Medal\, Korean Presidential Unit Citation Medal\, and the Republic of Korea Service Medal. He was an Air Force Veteran\, serving in the Vietnam Era from 1964-1968. He loved being a Vet and was so proud. He was a cook for them. He loved the outdoors whether it was camping\, fishing or going 4 wheeling in the dunes. He could make anyone laugh. Always such a big teddy bear. Gary loved to watch Westerns and was a huge Rams fan.
