He proudly served his country in the US Army from 1942 to 1945. After basic military training for 3 months and then 4 months training as a Motor Cyclist\, he followed with advanced training on the M4-A1 23 ton Sherman tank. He was deployed overseas to the European Theater of operations. He served with Co. B. 786th Tank Battalion as Corporal Tech-5 for 7 months and drove in support of the infantry in initial assaults and help set up defensive positions. He was also a master marksman on the Rifle. He served in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. West Special Care Center. John was the only child of the late Cmdr. and Mrs. Ira Smalling. Upon graduating from his beloved University of Texas\, John graduated from Officer Candidate School in Newport\, R.I. John followed in his father’s footsteps having a successful 26-year career in the United States Navy. He received his “wings” in 1965 in Corpus Christi\, Texas. He served with the VS-21 and VS-25 squadrons at North Island NAS Coronado\, Calif.\, and VS-41 squadron\, flying anti-submarine aircraft off the USS Constellation and the USS Enterprise. He was a field artillery crew member\, Battery B- 248\, at Ft. Campbell\, Kentucky and was awarded with a good conduct medal.
