After High school graduation Dennis Michael Lyons enlisted in the U S Army. He was assigned to Vietnam as a Combat Infantryman\, Light Weapons Specialist (E-4). While in Vietnam he served with valor being awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. His other awards included the National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal\, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge. Kizer passed from this earth as a result of cancer on 17 Jun 19. During his lifetime he served his community and nation honorably as a USAF Veteran\, Alamogordo Police Officer\, and various public service activities within the Alamogordo Community. He retired from the US Air Force after twenty years of service on 30 Jun 80 as a TSgt (E6). He was a fuel supervisor at the time of his discharge. Awards and Decorations received during his AF career include: Air Force Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters\, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters\, National Defense Service Medal\, Good Conduct Medal\, Vietnam Service Medal\, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award\, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm\, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal\, and Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters. Following his Military Retirement\, Mike joined the Alamogordo Department of Public Safety and served as a motorcycle policeman. Eisenhower\, assigned to lead a unit\, and directed troops where to move in the European Theater. His unit received two Army Distinguished Unit Citation Awards. SSG Barnett spent 23 years in the Army and retired in 1990. His last duty station was in Georgia with the 41st Field Artillery Battalion. Virgil had quite a few awards and commendations during his 23 year tenure\, to include: Purple Heart (earned in Vietnam)\, National Defense Medal\, Service Medal\, Army Good Conduct (W/6 stars)\, Overseas Medal (W/4 stars) Army Commendation\, Vietnam Campaign\, Republic of Vietnam W/60 Device\, Vietnam Gallantry W/Palm Device\, and Expert Rifle Badge. Virgil loved bowling and volunteered at a lot of leagues. He was a professional bowler at one point. He also worked for Boeing after retiring from the military\, but he really enjoyed delivering high-end automobiles to people all over the state. Virgil loved his family and will be sorely missed. David’s ex-wife told me the story of how he received his Two Bronze Stars and Silver Star with a V for Valor: David was a paratrooper in the infantry. He was sent to accompany a Lt. Col to another location when they were ambushed. Both the pilot and Lt. Col were shot and the door gunner was killed. David administered first aid to both of the men that were shot while also manning the machine gun until the pilot could get the helicopter under control and get them to safety. He was credited with saving the lives of the two who were shot and was given a battlefield commission and promoted to Sergeant. Mr. Wood died June 10\, 2019 after a long battle with leukemia. He was a Distinguished Military Graduate and received a Regular Army Commission. He served in combat with the 1st Squadron 17th Calvary Squadron of the 82nd Airborne Division. He attended flight school and was assigned as a helicopter gunship pilot in Vietnam\, including service during the Tet Offensive in 1968. He served as Aviation Safety Officer in the Army Reserves and Staff Judge Advocate in the Arkansas Army National Guard before retiring as a Major in 1984. During his career he was awarded over 14 decorations for valor and meritorious service\, including the Purple Heart. He also served as a State Representative in the Arkansas General Assembly for 20 years. He is survived by his wife of 57 years\, 2 sons\, grandchildren\, 2 sisters\, 1 brother\, and numerous nieces\, nephews and cousins.
