He lived to the age of 94. The Hero was drafted into the US Army Air Corps during World War II and flew combat missions over Germany and Italy. After the war\, he continued his service in the US Navy Reserves for a time then joined the US Air Force in time to serve combat tours in both Korea and Vietnam. His son was in Vietnam at the same time as his Dad. He retired in 1976 with 33 years service. He was an active member of VFW Post 5877 in Aiken and was a celebrant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Gary was assigned to the 3rd Armored Cavalry as an Infantryman\, attaining the rank of Specialist 4th class while In-Country. Mr. Purcell was awarded the National Defense Medal\, M-14 Marksman badge\, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters\, Combat Infantry Badge (CIB)\, Vietnam Campaign Medal\, and the Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. Gary became very involved in the community upon his discharge\, serving as a Midland Twp. Fireman\, Midland City Deputy Sheriff\, taught CPR/First Aide\, and was a member of VFW Post 3651. Mr. Purcell was dedicated to helping Veterans at the VA serving as a mentor for Vets suffering from PTSD\, and was a founding member of the Vets to Vets program. Mr. Purcell is survived by his wife\, one daughter\, and many extended family. We gratefully\, respectfully\, and with honor accept this mission. We welcome back our hero who fought for our freedom and we honor our hero for this service to our nation. George Cross is a United States Army veteran. He proudly served his country in the US Army from June 1942 to July 1946 during WWII. George Cross served in WWII as an Army Paratrooper. He jumped behind enemy lines on June 6\, 1944\, D-Day. Fortunately\, he survived the war without serious injury. George was released from active duty and honorably discharged in July 1946. While in the service of his country George Cross earned the Army Good Conduct Medal\, American Campaign WWII\, European Theatre WWII\, Victory Medal WWII\, Army Presidential Unit Citation\, Army Meritorious Unit Citation\, Senior Parachutist Badge\, Air Assault Badge. After his Army discharge\, he went to work in Montana as a Smoke Jumper.
