Duncan\, KIA\nUSN\, WWII\nAtlanta\, Georgia – 06-06-19\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE MISSION: \n It will be an honor and privilege to provide a Welcome Home\, after 75 years\, to a member of our Greatest Generation: Seaman 2nd Class\, Deward W. Duncan\, Jr.\, who was KIA on January 12\, 1944\, at the age of 19. After 75 years\, his remains will finally be home and laid to rest beside his parents.\n\nSeaman 2nd Class Duncan\, who entered the U.S. Navy from Georgia\, was stationed in Betio in the Gilbert Islands\, following the capture of Tarawa Atoll. On January 12\, 1944\, S2 Duncan was mortally wounded during a Japanese air raid when a bomb was dropped over Betio near his tent. He was reportedly buried the same day in a cemetery in Betio\, but his remains could not be identified from among the remains recovered after the war. In May of 2017\, the independent investigative group History Flight\, in partnership with DPAA\, located a grave site in Betio and recovered human remains. He lived to the age of 94. The Hero was drafted into the US Army Air Corps during World War II and flew combat missions over Germany and Italy. After the war\, he continued his service in the US Navy Reserves for a time then joined the US Air Force in time to serve combat tours in both Korea and Vietnam. His son was in Vietnam at the same time as his Dad. He retired in 1976 with 33 years service. He was an active member of VFW Post 5877 in Aiken and was a celebrant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church.
