Bob was also the Chaplain for Alamogordo American Legion Post 34 and the 5th District of the Department of New Mexico. He was an active PGR member. As for community service\, he was a member of the local Mustang Club. Bob succumbed to complications of cancer surgery on 26 May 2019.Of Bob’s 22 years of Military Service\, 10 were overseas with significant time in Vietnam. He was an Air Force Crew Member during his Vietnam service. Bob retired on 31 July 1980 as a MSGT (E7) Aircraft Armament Systems Superintendent. Robert served in the US Army from 1942 to 1945 as an Army Communications Specialist and was honorably discharged at the rank of Technician Fifth Grade (T/5). The gallantry of America’s oldest Medal of Honor recipient was well known. During WWII\, while stationed in Southern France\, a German hand grenade landed in the middle of his fellow soldiers. He threw his unprotected body on the grenade to save them. Robert received the Medal of Honor for his actions on that day\, along with his second Silver Star\, a second Purple Heart\, and a Bronze Star. Until his passing Robert was the only living Medal of Honor recipient in Oregon. He was a member of the Bend Band of Brothers. In his final years\, Robert helped create Oregon’s Medal of Honor Highway. It was dedicated in 2017 and runs from Newport to Nyssa\, the only memorial highway to cross a state nonstop.
