Ladies and Gentlemen of the Patriot Guard Riders,

We have been invited by the family of William Jacob Hutko to stand a flag line in honor of their father. Mr. Hutko served in the US Navy for two and a half years between WWII & the Korean War, leaving the Navy with the rank of Machinist Mate 3 and then joining what would now be considered the Merchant Marines, although at the time it was called the Military Sea Transport Service and the MSTS had authority over the Merchant Marines.

The MSTS was formed in late 1949 to consolidate shipment of military supplies from the four separate services used during World War II into a unified command. Nine months after the formation of the MSTS they were called on to move troops and equipment to the Korean Peninsula for the Korean War. Mr. Hutko was active during this entire time and for a while afterwards also.
