Wilhelm served in the US Navy from 2 June 1941 to 12 October 1945 on the USS Boise (CL-47) and the USS Toro (SS-422). He was Honorably Discharged at the Rate of Electrician’s Mate Second Class (Submarine Service) (E5). He earned the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/2 bronze service stars\, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal w/2 bronze service stars\, the American Area Campaign Medal\, the Submarine Combat Insignia w/1 gold service star\, the WWII Victory Medal\, and the National Defense Service Medal.
