Honor Mission
Wilbur John Ennis, Retired
USN – WWII, Korea, Vietnam
Goodyear, Arizona – 22 Apr 2018

ABOUT THE MISSION:

The PGR has been requested to stand for Commander Wilbur J. Ennis during services and military honors. It is with the greatest honor and respect we do so. Will spent his entire career in the United States Navy proudly serving the country he loved so much. Will served in WWII as a Navy carrier pilot assigned to the USS Hancock, a CV/CVA 19 aircraft carrier. Will was an aide to Admiral “Bull” Halsey, and fought in such battles as Marianas, Saipan and Iwo Jima among many others. Will was shot down three times over the Pacific. After the third time he was called into the Admiral’s cabin and was told he had earned the right to go home. He refused and said “I have to live with myself. “In October of 1946 Will voluntarily recalled to active duty indefinitely.

Will made the transition from prop to jet and continued to serve his country in Korea and Vietnam. Will’s last duty assignment and major command was that of CIC Officer, Commander Carrier Division 1.

Will retired and was honorably discharged in 1967 after giving his country a total of 24 years and 8 months of his life. Will received the following for his service: Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross (w/1 Star), Air Medal (w/3 Gold Stars), Navy Commendation (w/1 Gold Star ), Navy Unit Commendation (w/2 Gold Stars ), American Theater, Asiatic Pacific (w/3 Stars), National Defense Service Medal, China Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, Korean Service Medal (w/3 Stars), Philippines Liberation Medal (w/2 Stars ), Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
