ABOUT THE MISSION:
SFC Walter Thompson was born on March 20, 1949 in Spartanburg, SC. He was a lifelong and die-hard Clemson fan. After his retirement from the US Army, he worked at Palmetto Health in Richland County as Security, at the Talbert Shives Funeral Home. He found his way back to Ft. Jackson where he again worked in security before retiring again to spend more time with his family. SFC Walter Thompson retired from the US Army after 26 years of honorable service. SFC Thompson was a member of the 101st Airborne and as a Drill Sergeant. He loved his service time spent in in Panama, Germany, and many bases in the United States. He was a Vietnam War Veteran who served as Infantryman and Indirect Fire Infantryman. During his service in Vietnam, he was awarded the Silver Star. His other awards included the Army Meritorious Service Ribbon, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Medal with Star, Vietnam Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Second Award, Republic of Vietnam Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Meritorious Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Medal and a Unit citation Badge. This is a two part mission.
