Honor Mission
Walter J. Kellett, POW/MIA, KIA
USAAF – WWII
MULTI-CITY, MULTI-STATE – 10-03-19, 10-05-19

ABOUT THE MISSION:

The family of Walter J. Kellett has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to honor his service to our country. Cpl. Walter J. Kellett, an Ironwood, MI soldier was missing in action for 77 years will be laid to rest at home in the Riverside Cemetery in Ironwood on October 5, 2019. Walter, known as “Bobbie”, was born January 20, 1920. Raised in Ironwood, Walter grew into a life of service. On August 10, 1940, he enlisted in the Army with his friend and neighbor, Jack Kennedy. After training, he was assigned to the Army Air Corps in the Philippines. In 1942, Kellett was a member of the 17th Pursuit Squadron, 24th Pursuit Group serving in the Philippines. After the Japanese invasion, he was transferred to the Provisional Air Corps Regiment. In 1942, after a series of battles with no reinforcements or supplies, the American surrender of Bataan ended their courageous efforts. It was not until after the war was over, on June 15, 1945, that word of his death was communicated to the family. A memorial service was held on August 5, 1945, at Salem Lutheran Church. In July 2019, using DNA testing of his remains and comparisons with his sister and nephews, positive identification was made. We are bringing “Bobbie” home to his baby sister after 77 years.
