ABOUT THE MISSION:
Mr. Shafer was a veteran of World War II and fought in Europe with the US Army. He was wounded and left for dead but managed to crawl to an aid station for help and then spent several months in a hospital in England recovering from his wounds. He was a Combat Infantryman and Light Truck driver. He earned a Campaign ribbon with 2 bronze stars for combat in Rhineland Central Europe, Purple Heart, Occupation Ribbon (Germany), Victory Ribbon and 3 Overseas Service bars. He served a total of 23 months, with 18 months in Europe. Obituary
