Thomas Edwin Wergen

Thomas Edwin Wergen is a United States Army Veteran. Tom entered active duty on March 7, 1966. Tom’s Military Occupation Specialty was 12B40 – Recon Sergeant. Tom served 2 years, 7 months and 3 days of active duty, including 1 year, 2 months and 22 days in Vietnam from July 1967 to October 1968.
Shortly after Tom’s tour began, he volunteered to lead a group of Tunnel Rats; a special combat squad. Tunnel Rats searched, encountered and denied (destroyed) hundreds of tunnels used by the North Vietnamese. One of the major missions undertaken by Tom and his squad was spearheading the immense and critical tunnel destruction operation near Saigon, dubbed AKRON III, which proved to severely impede the Tet Offensive in 1968.
On Oct. 9, 1968, Tom was released from active duty and transferred to the United States Army Reserves, having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant -E-6. Tom’s last duty assignment was Headquarters Company, 168th Engineering Battalion, CBT (Compulsory Basic Training), USARPAC (United States Army – Pacific.On March 6, 1972, having completed his term of service obligation, Tom was honorably discharged.Tom was presented the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations against hostile forces in the Republic of Vietnam during the period July 1967 to Oct 1968. In addition to the Bronze Star, Tom was awarded; National Defense Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal; Combat Infantryman Badge; Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 Device; Vietnam Service Medal; and two overseas bars.Tom passed due to combat-related illnesses suffered as a result of his exposure to Agent Orange.
