Sowell served honorably in the USN and USNR for 23 years attaining the rank of TMCH E9\, Torpedomen’s Mate Chief Petty Officer. While serving Thaddeus received 5 Good Conduct Medals; the Sublant Commendation Award\, which was awarded to the Navy’s 14 ballistic-missile submarines assigned to the Pacific-based Task Force 134 and the Atlantic-based Task Force 144 recognizing their excellence in strategic deterrence.
