ABOUT THE MISSION:
Friends and members of a POW group have invited the Patriot Guard Riders to help celebrate the contributions and efforts of an American Patriot that volunteered and was commissioned in the French Resistance movement. Dame Mary, now of Virginia Beach, moved to Belgium with her family from Lawrence, Mass., in 1931 at age 7, driven abroad by the Great Depression. She was 17 when World War II broke out and she promptly joined the resistance. She was eventually captured in France with her fiancé. He was executed; she was sentenced to 16 months in a prison camp.
Released from the camp at the end of 1943, Dame Mary rejoined the resistance in January 1944, this time as a liaison officer delivering messages to and from the battlefront. When the terrible war was finally over, she received what is described as Belgium’s version of the Medal of Honor, and was knighted by The king of Belgium in 2004. Dame Barraco returned to the United Stated in 1946. She married in 1949 and was widowed in 1978. She now devotes herself to public speaking on issues of patriotism and the price of freedom.
This Mission is sponsored by the POW Group that meets at Bunnys every month.
