ABOUT THE MISSION:
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Patriot Guard Riders, it is with heartfelt sorrow that I announce the passing of John “Shovelhead” Munson, Patriot Guard Rider, Support Vehicle, Patriot and friend to all. Anne and family has asked that we stand in Honor of John’s life and commitment to Honoring Veterans and their families at one of the rawest times in their lives as they lay their loved one to rest at countless missions since 2009. John was not afraid of the snow nor driving rain; John showed up when even the weather was afraid to be there, as one member described it. John served the Patriot Guard Riders as support vehicle with the SWWA District but he and Annie were no stranger to the other districts in the state. They were especially fond of Tahoma National Cemetery and attended missions there as often as possible.
John tried to join the military but was denied due to a piece of metal in his back he received when he was nine years old in Greely Co. John was one of 36 kids on a school bus that was hit by a train on 14 DEC 1961, John barely survived, 20 kids did not. John’s dad told him to sit behind the driver on cold days as that was where the heater was, which he did. The entire back half of the bus was demolished.
There will be an opportunity for all members to sign a PGR flag as well as the casket at the memorial. John loved to see the flags flying. Please feel free to fly your bike flags proudly in honor of William John “Shovelhead” Munson on this day.
Please join with me as we stand with Annie and the rest of John’s family
and friends to pay our respects for this true American Patriot.
We will additionally provide a RHG for John from the memorial to the Burial location.
