Springfield, Illinois – 30 Oct 2017

ABOUT THE MISSION:

The Patriot Guard has been invited to provide a flag line for the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument groundbreaking ceremony. The groundbreaking will occur in the War Memorials area at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, IL. The Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal Of Honor Foundation is primarily responsible for this monument being built in Springfield. Currently there are 26 of these monuments that have been dedicated throughout the United States with many more being planned. The purpose of the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument is to honor Gold Star Families, preserve the memory of the fallen, and stand as a stark reminder that Freedom is not free.
Two Medal Of Honor recipients will be present to participate in the groundbreaking. First, the namesake of the Memorial Monument Hershel “Woody” Williams will be present. He earned his Medal Of Honor for heroic acts performed on the island of Iwo Jima during WWII while he was serving as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps in 1945. His Medal Of Honor was presented to him by then President Of The United States Harry S. Truman. He received his Medal on October 5, 1945 in a ceremony at the White House. Secondly, Harold Arthur “Hal” Fritz will be there. He received his Medal Of Honor for heroic acts performed by him on January 11, 1969 while serving with the United States Army in Vietnam. He was a 1st Lieutenant with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. He received his Medal Of Honor from then President Richard Nixon at the White House on March 2, 1971.

In addition to these two heroes, there will be a number of Gold Star Families, dignitaries, and other honored guests present.
