After a brief stop we will continue the escort him to the hotel. Woody will be in town for the ground breaking of the Gold Star Families Monument which will be located in the War Memorial area of Oak Ridge Cemetery. The Hershel Woody Williams Medal Of Honor Foundation is the lead on bringing one of these monuments to Springfield. There are currently 26 such monuments dedicated at this point around the country. A flag line will be established inside of the main terminal building prior to his arrival.\nThe purpose of the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument is to honor Gold Star Families\, preserve the memory of the fallen\, and stand as a stark reminder that Freedom is not free. As a young man\, Hershel drove a cab. His duties included delivering Western Union telegram death notices to families that had lost a loved one in battle. This experience weighed heavily on Woody’s heart through the years. On October 21\, 2017 Woody was in San Diego\, California for the christening of a Navy ship bearing his name. The USNS Hershel “Woody” Williams is a 784 foot ship that is manned by 250 personnel. It has a 52\,000 square foot flight deck. It’s the Navy’s second EBS or Expeditionary Sea Base. Construction began in October 2015. The ship will go into service early next year. It will support MH-53 and MH-60 helicopters with an option to support MV-22 tilt-rotor aircraft. This is the first time that a live Medal Of Honor recipient has had a naval vessel named after them. Hershel is 94 years old he is from Fairmont\, West Virginia. He received his Medal Of Honor for actions above and beyond the call of duty on February 23\,1945 two days after landing on the island of Iwo Jima. He was a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and was trained as a flame thrower operator. He was assigned to the 3rd Marine Division. In April 1945 Captain Donald Beck wrote the recommendation that Hershel receive the Medal Of Honor. President Harry Truman awarded Hershel the Medal Of Honor on October 5\, 1945 in a ceremony at the White House. In addition to the Medal Of Honor\, Hershel received the Purple Heart for wounds he suffered on March 6\,1945 in combat. Hershel retired in 1969 as a Chief Warrant Officer 4.
