Robert A. Gusberti Sr., Veteran
USN – WWII
MULTI-CITY, New York – 10 Feb 2017
ABOUT THE MISSION:
The family of Robert A. Gusberti, Sr has requested the participation of the Patriot Guard Riders in the military honors funeral of this “Greatest Generation” hero.
ABOUT THE MISSION:
Robert A. Gusberti, Sr answered his country’s call to service during World War II. He enlisted in the US Navy and rose to the rank of Seaman 1st Class. “Gus” served aboard the USS Lamson. The Lamson participated in many campaigns – Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Cape Gloucester, Eniwetok, Marshall Islands, Philippines – at all times provided screening and bombardment in support of these operations. It was during the Leyte Gulf action in December of 1944 that the USS Lamson continually fought off Japanese Kamikaze attacks successfully shooting down many of the attacking aircraft. Luck ran out after one of the Japanese Kamikaze’s crashed into the ships superstructure. 25 sailors were killed and 54 were wounded. Gus suffered severe burns and received a Purple Heart for his injuries.
After the war, Robert returned home to marry and raise a family. He retired after 30 yrs working at Benet Labs/Watervliet Arsenal designing large artillery. He also served his fellow man by becoming a member of the Watervliet Fire Dept for a time.
Gus also participated in two Honor Flights to Washington D.C.
