He served in WWII from 1942 to 1945 as a Cockswain\, Powderman\, and a Boatswain’s Mate aboard the USS Portland. He was involved in ten major battles—Alaskan Conflict down to Okinawa. He was honorably discharged at the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer.
