Robert William Sturm

Honor Mission
Robert William Sturm, Veteran
USA, USAR –
Glendale, Arizona – 07-05-19

ABOUT THE MISSION:

Robert William Sturm served honorably with the USA and the USAR from 1951 – 1958. He attained the rank of Private SP4 earning the Good Conduct Medal. His primary duty was serving as an Etymologist assigned to Edgewood Arsenal studying whether insects could be used by enemies to transfer diseases to large areas of population. The U.S. Army Chemical Corps conducted classified human subject research at the Edgewood Arsenal facility in Maryland. The purpose was to evaluate the impact of low-dose chemical warfare agents on military personnel and to test protective clothing pharmaceuticals, and vaccines. A portion of these studies were directed at the feasibility of using insects to transfer diseases to population areas along with psycho-chemical warfare. These studies were grouped under the title of the “Medical Research Volunteer Program”. The MRVP was also driven by intelligence requirements and the need for new and more effective interrogation techniques.
