Richard served in the US Navy from 8 April 1965 to 7 April 1969 on the USS Hancock (CVA-19). He was Honorably Discharged at the rate of Electronics Technician (Nuclear) Third Class (E4). During his time in the Navy\, he earned the National Defense Service Medal\, the Vietnam Service Medal\, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal\, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon\, the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon\, and the Navy Good Conduct Medal.
