DESCRIPTION:Honor Mission\nRay Garland \, Veteran\nUSMC – \, WWII\, Korea\nCoeur d’ Alene\, Idaho – 04-26-19\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE MISSION: \nThe Patriot Guard has been requested to stand in Honor of an American Hero. Ray Garland was the last member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. At Pearl Harbor Ray Garland\, a US Marine Corps Sergeant served aboard the USS Tennessee. On December 7\, 1941 when Japanese bombers struck the Hawaiian naval base\, killing 2403 American sailors\, soldiers and civilians while thrusting the United States into World War II. The USS Tennessee was a dreadnought battleship wedged between the USS West Virginia and USS Arizona that fateful Sunday morning. The West Virginia took the torpedoes and would have turned over if it was not tied to the Tennessee. Burning oil from the Arizona damaged the hull of the USS Tennessee. In an attempt to fight the flames below deck Ray Garland suffered severe facial injuries that earned him a Purple Heart . He remained at sea for several years after the events of Pearl Harbor but eventually returned home in Butte\, Montana.
