Army at the age of 32 in 1946 and was assigned to the 96th Infantry, Division 382 Regiment, in Okinawa, Japan, after WWII. Later, while serving in the Korean War he volunteered to be a combat medic and was ultimately awarded a Bronze Star for valor in combat. He received an honorable discharge as well as U.
