HOTH Mission
Rabun County – Honor our Veterans Convoy
USA USMC USN USAF USCG
Rabun Gap, Georgia – 05-18-19

ABOUT THE MISSION:
Many Americans celebrate Armed Forces Day annually on the third Saturday of May. It is a day to pay tribute to men and women who served in the United States’ armed forces. Armed Forces Day is also part of Armed Forces Week, which begins on the second Saturday of May. Once again the Patriot Guard Riders have been invited to attend and assist with the Rabun County “Honor our Veterans Convoy”. Putting your mind to rest this is not a parade as such it is a moving tribute to past and current veterans and will be moving at roadway speeds (approx. 35 mph). They have invited every man and woman who has served in any branch of our military to participate. Participants do not have to be Rabun County residents but can be from any locale. As in years past there will also be vintage vehicles as part of the convoy carrying veterans of the various wars and times of peace. Just to provide a little history about the date please read the following: On August 31, 1949, Louis Johnson, who was the United States’ Secretary of Defense, announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The event stemmed from the armed forces’ unification under one department – the Department of Defense. The Army, Navy and Air Force leagues adopted the newly formed day. The Marine Corps League declined to drop support for Marine Corps Day but supports Armed Forces Day also. The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated on Saturday, May 20, 1950. The theme for that day was “Teamed for Defense”, which expressed the unification of all military forces under one government department. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the day was designed to expand public understanding of what type of job was performed and the role of the military in civilian life. Armed Forces Day was a day for the military to show “state-of-the-art” equipment to Americans. It was also a day to honor and acknowledge Americans in the armed forces. Parades, open houses, receptions and air shows were held at the inaugural Armed Forces Day. Armed Forces Day is still celebrated nationwide and is part of Armed Forces Week. Now the Convoy route is approximately 25 miles along Hwy 441 N from Dillard, GA, ending at Tallulah Falls School, Tallulah Falls, GA and is LEO escorted throughout the ride. Speeds can vary at locations where citizens are not there to help celebrate our veterans. The Convoy will be gathering at Rabun Gap/Nacoochee School, in Dillard, GA. The school is in the north end of the county on Hwy 441 approximately 6 miles north of the town of Clayton. Once the Convoy begins it then travels south through the towns of Dillard, Mountain City, Clayton and Wiley then across Tallulah River gorge bridge, and ends at Tallulah Falls School (TFS). TFS is approximately 1/2 mile south of the bridge where we will establish a Flag Line for the Vets. If like past years, the procession will probably be 45-60 minutes in duration. A reception is planned at the school for all Veterans and participants. It is a beautiful Spring ride through the north Georgia mountains. This year again we will be inviting our brothers and sisters in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama to join us in this beautiful ride and great tradition. Folks, this is not just a bike ride and all vehicles and patriots are welcome. Hope to see as many as possible there. Let’s help Rabun County honor our Veterans on this Armed Forces Day 2019.
