ABOUT THE MISSION:
Honor Mission: Paul E. Massey, USN, WWII, 90, Canton, GA 27 Mar. 2017
I am grieved to report that America has lost another WWII Veteran.
The family of Petty Officer Paul “Poppy” Massey has asked the Patriot Guard Riders to stand for their WWII Hero and it will be our honor to do so. PO Massey was a Radarman 3rd Class aboard the light cruiser, USS Birmingham, where he survived the Kamikaze attack of May 4, 1945. He had decided to skip a medical appointment and that part of the ship was destroyed in the attack.
He served honorably for two years, being discharged in June, 1946. Among his awards was the WWII Victory Medal.
After his service, he returned to college, played football, and served as a football coach in high school, college and the NFL. He was also instrumental in the signing of the first female to play professional football. He was also responsible for the recruitment of several famous athletes.
This will be a Flag Line only mission at the Georgia National Cemetery at 1:30 on 27 Mar. 2017.
