Honor Mission
Neal Leroy Johnson, Retired
Surprise, Arizona – 11-10-20


Neal Leroy Johnson is a United States Air Force veteran.  Neal was a member of the Air Force ROTC program at Colorado State University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Business and Computer Sciences.  Neal joined the United States Air Force on July 19, 1971, as a commissioned Second Lieutenant.  Neal had multiple MOS (Military Occupation Specialty).  He was a C33S4- Commander, Communications-Computer Systems for 2 yrs., 9 mos.  He was a 33S3C-Communications-Computer System, Software Programmer/Analyst for 13 yrs., 9 mo.  He was 33S3-Communications-Computer Systems for 7 yrs., 6 mo.
Neal’s many assignments included Wright Patterson Air Force Base as Computer Operations Officer.  He was stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany, where he was assigned to the 7102nd Computer Services Squadron as a Systems Analyst, Data Base Manager, and Chief of the Worldwide Military Command and Control System responsible for supporting both U.S. and NATO activities.  Neal was assigned as Commander, 1001st Space Systems Squadron at Lowry Air Force Base, and was responsible for satellite missile system software support.  Neal was transferred to Buckley Air National Guard and assigned as a Commander, Systems and Logistics Flight, Space Warning Squadron.  His squadron was instrumental and recognized for their outstanding performance in updating ground station software to detect tactile missiles launched by Iraq during Desert Storm.
On July 31, 1995, having 24 years of distinguished service, Neal retired and was honorably discharged, having attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  During his service to our country, Neal received the following medals, awards, and ribbons: Defense Meritorious Service Medal w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster; Meritorious Service Medal w/2 Oak Leaf Clusters; Air Force Commendation Medal; Air Force Outstanding Unit Award w/3 Oak Leaf Clusters; Air Force Organizational Excellence Award w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster; National Defense Service Medal w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster; Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon; Air Force Service Award Ribbon w/Silver Oak Leaf Cluster; Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon w/Bronze Service Start; Air Force Training Ribbon.
