Patriot Guard Riders

This will be a very special and touching mission. We have been asked by the USAF K9 Unit Charleston and his handler SSgt Timothy B. Garrett to participate in the honoring of one of their Military Work Dogs.

“Akim” entered his Air Force career in October of 2005. He was initially certified for explosives detection. He was eventually trained and certified in patrol work. His first assignment was with the 437^th Security Forces Squadron at Charleston AFB. SSGT Garrett was his final handler up to Akim’s retirement in 2014. During his service MWD Akim had been on several deployments around the world including being attached to 1^st Cav in Baghdad Iraq, Kandahar Afghanistan, Kuwait, and U.A.E. MWD Akim was a key member on countless missions supporting POTUS, VPOTUS, FLOTUS, with the office of U.S. Secret Service on several different continents. He was also assigned to details for foreign and domestic dignitaries ensuring safety and security at their every step.

MWD Akim has protected and saved countless lives both here at home and afar.

Full military honors will be given to MWD Akim for his loyal and honorable service to our country.

Mission Parts: This will be a one-day mission

Mission Details: The ceremony will begin at the air base theater. After the ceremony we will provide escort to MWD Kennel Facility for the final service and burial with full military honors. We will form flag lines where requested. There will be approximately 5 intersections with K9 Officers posted alongside of a PGR member with a flag along the route. Those at intersections will fall in at the end of the procession and continue to the MWD Kennel Facility.

Base safety gear requirements: Helmet, Long Sleeve Shirt, Long Leg Pants, Eye Protection, Full Fingered Gloves, Above Ankle Boots. Reflective vests NOT required.

Part 1:
Location: Charleston Air Force Base, Visitor Center, Dorchester Rd., Charleston

Assemble: 12:00 pm – 12:30 pm

Brief: 12:30 pm

Execution: We will be escorted to the base theater where we will establish a flag line for the service of MWD Akim. Upon completion of the ceremony we will provide an escort to the MWD Kennel for final service and military honors.

Part 2:
Location: MWD Kennel
Execution: Upon the arrival of the funeral procession we will form a flag line for the graveside service and military honors.
