Short notice for Friday Honor Mission to honor a local hero and Vietnam Veteran.
The PGR has been invited to participate in the following Honor Mission for Michael Mooney.
The former chief of the Gilford Fire Department died at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia after a lengthy illness. Michael Mooney was 63. Michael Mooney saved a woman’s life as her third-floor apartment burned during the 1969 McIntyre Block fire in Laconia, He became a full-time Laconia firefighter in 1968 after fighting for four years in Vietnam.
He moved to Gilford in 1971 and became chief in 1979. Mooney was president of the New England and the New Hampshire fire chiefs association, led Lakes Region Mutual Aid, and was chairman of the state Board of Fire Control for 15 years.
He retired from the department in September 2005.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Laconia.
