Merle served in the US Navy from 4 January 1944 to 14 September 1947 as an Aviation Machinist Mate 3rd Class in Naval Air Transport Service Transport Squadron 1 (VR-1). He served in places like Noumea\, New Caledonia\, Hawaii and Guam. Merle earned the American Theater Medal\, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal\, a Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.
