Honor Mission
Merced T. Montoya, Veteran
Phoenix, Arizona – 06-29-20

Merced T. Montoya Jr. was a United States Army veteran. He proudly served his country in the US Army from 1942 to 1945. Sergeant Montoya served during WWII and participated in D- Day invasions and the Battle of the Bulge. He also served by liberating concentration camps later in the war. Eisenhower had issued orders to transport nearby townspeople to these camps and force them to tour it and to witness the horrors. Montoya participated in the transporting of German civilians to these camps. Many Germans were feigning ignorance of the camps and Eisenhower wanted them personally to view the carnage and brutality. Later after his time in Europe Sergeant Montoya served as Drill Sergeant teaching new recruits to prepare for war as he had so bravely participated in himself. Merced T. Montoya Jr. was released from active duty and honorably discharged in 1945.While in the service of his country Merced T. Montoya Jr earned the World War II Victory Medal, Ardennes-Alsace Campaign Citation and the European -Africa-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.
