U.S. Army SSG Matthew J. West, 36, was killed in action on August 30, 2010 in Afghanistan, when his vehicle was hit by an IED while serving with the 62nd Ordnance Company (EOD), 242nd Ordnance Battalion (EOD), 71st Ordnance Group (EOD), 20th Support Command (CBRNE). Four fellow soldiers were killed in the blast. SSG West’s passions were serving his country and being an amazing father to his children. He was on his third tour of duty, having served previous deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. His Awards and Decorations include, the Bronze Star, Joint Service Commendations Medal, Army Commendation Medal-2, Meritorious Unit Citation, Army Good Conduct Medel-2, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal-2, Irag Campaign Medal -w/Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, – 2, NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge, and the Senior Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge, SSG West left behind his wife, and their three children. The children were all under five years old at the time of SSG West’s death. The family will receive a mortgage-free home through the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Gold Star Family Home Program.

We will stage at the soccer field at this location along with local law enforcement, fire departments and civic leaders to escort the West family to their new mortgage free home. The home is approximately 2.5 miles away.
