Lloyd Edward Henson, POW/MIA, Veteran
Portland, Oregon – 03-14-19
ABOUT THE MISSION:
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Patriot Guard Riders, we have been invited to stand for Lloyd Edward Henson, age 99. Lloyd served in the US Air Force from 14 October 1941 to 13 October 1945 and was Honorably Discharged as a Technical Sergeant (E7). He was the Flight Engineer and a tail gunner in a Martin Marauder B-26 twin engine bomber.
Before going overseas to Africa he was on flights from Puerto Rico-Brazil-British New Guinea and loved to tell stories of how they were so overloaded on take-off that they would run into the pineapples at the end of the runway. The pineapples would fly up into the cargo area and they got to enjoy fresh pineapple on the way back to Puerto Rico.
On January 13, 1942 during his third mission over North Africa he was shot down. Only he and 2 others were able to the parachute from the plane as it went down. He spent the remainder of the War as a POW at Stalag 17B in Austria and survived the 18 day 183 Death March that occurred in the final days of WWII. He was liberated on 3 May 1945 after 3 years in captivity.
Lloyd earned the American Defense Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal w/1bronze service star, a Good Conduct Medal and the POW Medal.. Please join us as we pay our respects and honor his service to our nation.
