DESCRIPTION:Arlington National Cemetery\nLeon Malcom Burgess\, Retired\nUSAF – WWII\nAlexandria\, Virginia – 06-12-19\n\n\n\nABOUT THE MISSION: \nLt Col Leon Malcom Burgess\, 85\, a U.S. Air Force World War II Combat Veteran from Anderson\, SC\, died 5 July 2002.  He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943\, trained as a Navigator.  He served in the Western Pacific as a Navigator/Radar Operator aboard B-29’s.  He flew 29 combat missions serving with the 19th Bombardment Group in the Marianas Islands.  After the war he returned to school and then resumed his Air Force career flying the B-47 until he transferred to the Minuteman Missile program\, where he served as the Commander of the 508th Strategic Mission Squadron.  He retired in 1973 as a Master Navigator\, with over 6000 flying hours.  Among his many awards and commendations are the Distinguished Flying Cross\, Air Medal w/3olc\, Air Force Commendation Medal w/2olc\, American Campaign Medal Asiatic-Pacific Campaign w/2 bronze service Stars\, the WWII Victory Medal and Master Missile man Badge.  His wife Helen Sue\, age 92\, died 2 June 2018 and they will be interred together.  They are survived by a large and loving family and missed by all.
