Honor Mission
Joseph K. Cagney, Veteran
USA, USAF – WWII
Phoenix, Arizona – 05-03-19

ABOUT THE MISSION:

Joseph K. Cagney served honorably in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 – 1945. He served in the European Theatre, was sent home, and redeployed to the Pacific Theatre with the 42nd Bomb Squadron during WWII, fighting in the Mandated Island Air Offensive of Japan. They were a series of Japanese air attacks on the Mariana Islands that took place between November 1944 and January 1945. These raids by the Japanese targeted United States Army Air Forces bases and sought to disrupt the bombing of Japan by B-29 Superfortress heavy bombers operating from the islands. The Japanese lost 37 aircraft during this operation but destroyed 11 B-29s and damaged a further 43. After the Marianas began to come under attack, the United States military stepped up its raids on the Japanese-held islands which could be used to launch raids on the B-29 bases. This offensive, named the Mandated Island Air Offensive, was critical in protecting the upcoming battle and subsequent US victory at Iwo Jima. Joseph was part of this offensive. He also took part in the first use of air to air radar to locate enemy aircraft. Joseph earned the rank of T/Sgt. While serving he earned the following awards and commendations: European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon; Good Conduct Medal; Distinguished Unit Badge with 1 Device; Air Medal with 9 Oak Leaf Clusters; Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon with 2 Service Stars. We will be honoring Joseph who passed in 2010 but had no military honors, and his wife Charlotte who passed recently.
