Joseph J. Fraser, Veteran
USN , WWII
Roslindale, Massachusetts – 08-06-20
ABOUT THE MISSION:
The family of US Navy WWII Veteran, Joseph Fraser, 95, has requested our presence at the graveside service for their beloved Joe. Joe was 18 when he enlisted in the Navy in 1944. He attended Aerial Gunnery School in Pensacola, FL, and was sent to San Diego for further training. There he signed on for duty on the Aircraft Carrier USS Wasp ( “The Mighty Stinger”) where he served in the Pacific Theater as Flagman (Flag Handler). On 19 March 1945, the carrier was hit by a 500 pound bomb suffering 388 casualties including 102 dead. Despite the fact that the bomb pierced the flight deck no more than 50 yards from where he was, Joe escaped unscathed. Joe remained in the Navy until the end of the War. He was discharged in Boston on 7 December 1945, attaining the rank of Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Plane Handler) Third Class. Joseph passed away in June of this year. He will be interred on what would have been this 96th birthday.
