Honor Mission
Joseph E. Finneran, KIA
USA – WWII
Needham, Massachusetts – 11-01, 11-08, 11-09-19

ABOUT THE MISSION:

The family of US Army Air Force KIA/MIA Joseph Finneran, 22, has asked us to be present for the repatriation and funeral of their loved one, unaccounted for 76 years. Joseph Finneran joined the Army December 18, 1941, just 11 days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Although he began his Army career as a Private, he was commissioned as an officer on July 2, 1942 and trained on the B-24 “Liberator” Aircraft. Finneran was part of a crew aboard that aircraft, based in Benghazi, Libya. August 1 1943 on a bombing mission against the oil fields and refineries at Ploesti, Romania while a member of the USAAF 9th Air Force, 98th Bomb Group. His aircraft crashed after being hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire. Joe was a bombardier on that plane, a B-24, “Old Baldy”. In some accounts, it was said that he was completing his twenty-fifth mission, the mission which would have allowed him to “max out.” Of the Americans killed during that raid, “Operation Tidal Wave,” only 27 could be identified and Finneran wasn’t among them. What was left of the crews’ remains were buried as unknowns by monks in a local cemetery with a white cross marking the site in the Hero Section of the Civilian and Military Cemetery of Bolovan in Ploiesti. Following the war, those remains were reinterred in the American Military Cemetery at Neuville-en-Condroz, Belgium. The remains, which were later identified as Finneran’s, were exhumed in 2017 and later identified through anthropological and DNA analysis. Joe is finally coming home and will be laid to rest beside his mother. Joe is survived by 2 nephews and 4 nieces.
