Joseph served in the Oregon Army National Guard from 20 March 1969 to 19 March 1984. He started his service as a 13B Field Artilleryman and then became a 13D Tactical Operations Command Vehicle Operator. He was Honorably Retired at the rank of SFC (E7). His last unit was C Battery 2nd Battalion 218 Field Artillery on Cornfoot Rd. He earned the Armed Forces Reserve Medal – National Guard w/ bronze hourglass\, an Army Commendation Medal\, the Army Service Ribbon and the Expert M16A1 Badge.
