ABOUT THE MISSION:
Joseph Albert Lessard is a United States Navy Veteran. Joe served 3 years, 11 months, and 18 days including service in the Pacific theatre during WWII. Joe enlisted on July 30, 1943. Joe had qualifications and certifications in Combat Air Crew and Radar Operator. Joe completed service school education in Aviation Ordnance, A & B school, and Gunnery course. Joe served on VTB-3 – a torpedo bombing plane, OTU – Operational Training Unit, Torpedo Squadron, and aboard the USS Tarawa (LHA-1). The Tarawa was an amphibious assault ship, the lead ship of her class. On June 20, 1947, Joe was honorably discharged, having attained the rank of Aviation Ordnance man 2nd Class. Joe received the following for his service to our country: Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal; American Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; Good Conduct Medal. At the age of 17, Joe signed on the dotted line and took the oath to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic to preserve the freedom and liberties we all enjoy today. Joe is a member of The Greatest Generation and a True Patriot. Joe epitomizes “service before self”. It is our honor to stand in silent reverence as we show respect and gratitude to this hero for his sacrifices made for this nation.

Although all prior Statewide mandates have been lifted at staging locations, all members must still adhere to the following:· All members are required to carry a face mask/cloth covering at all times during the mission. There are still partners (funeral homes, cemeteries, churches) that require masks to be worn. Some families may also request masks/face coverings be worn. There are no exceptions.· If you feel ill or have a temperature, please stay home until you improve.· If, in the past week, you have tested positive for COVID-19, or you have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the past week, immediately notify the State Captain or an Assistant State Captain. · Social distancing is recommended, but not required unless cemetery, funeral home, other partner require it, or if a family requests it.· Wash your hands before, during (as practical), and after the mission.· Water will be provided by the flag support person and passed out only by that person. No snacks will be provided by flag support and members should not bring any to share either.
