He attended Texas Christian University\, receiving a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. He entered the United States Air Force upon graduation and became a rescue helicopter pilot in Vietnam where he received numerous medals for his heroic rescue efforts. John was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Marshall and a member of the Rotary Club.
