ABOUT THE MISSION:
U.S. Navy Commander John Ambler Smalling (Ret) passed peacefully Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018, at his home, The James L. West Special Care Center. John was the only child of the late Cmdr. and Mrs. Ira Smalling. Upon graduating from his beloved University of Texas, John graduated from Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. John followed in his father’s footsteps having a successful 26-year career in the United States Navy. He received his “wings” in 1965 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He served with the VS-21 and VS-25 squadrons at North Island NAS Coronado, Calif., and VS-41 squadron, flying anti-submarine aircraft off the USS Constellation and the USS Enterprise. In 1971 John served with the VAL-4 pilot squadron in Bing Thuy, Vietnam, flying the OV-10s. Parts of the above text come from the Greenwood Funeral Home obituary which can be viewed here.
