The family of Joe Hosteen Kellwood has requested the presence of The Patriot Guard Riders for Services and Military honors
Joe H. Kellwood was a United States Marine Corps Veteran. He served his country during World War II as a Navajo Code Talker in the 1st Marine Division. He was one of the Few, the Proud, he was a WWII U.S.M.C. Navajo Code Talker. The code talkers used the Navajo language to outsmart the Japanese in World War II. Joe saw battle on Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa. In World War II, young Marine Joe Hosteen Kellwood protected vital military messages with his native Navajo language. The code was so secretive that it was not declassified until 1968. He was trained at Navajo Code Talker’s School at Camp Elliott in San Diego, California and was the recipient of the Congressional Silver Medal for his service.He was also awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, Naval Unit Commendation, Good Conduct, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and WWII Victory Medal.
